A Quick View : Windows 8

Microsoft launched Windows 8 on Friday. Microsoft wants to ensure that its new OS runs on all form factors such as PC's, Tablets etc.. Microsoft foresees people using a common OS, seamlessly interoperating between different devices without any glitches. It also envisions gadgets that can function as a tablet or laptop depending on the users requirements. It works with Mouse and Keyboard as well as Touchscreen. Most of you know about this feature I guess. For this purpose, Microsoft had to make some big changes to Windows.

Windows 8 is heavily integrated with Microsoft's web services. Users are provided with an option to log on to their PS's with a Windows Live ID, instead of a Local Users Account, for seamless functioning between various devices. For instance, if you are following certain news feed in the reader app on your Tablet, the same content will also be available on your PC. Cool, ain't it? Besides, you are automatically logged-on to those metro-style apps and services that use your Live ID for authentication.

The Modern User Interface
In one of the most radical changes to Windows in the last 28 years, Microsoft has introduced a new tile-based user interface known as the Modern UI. You might have seen this tile based UI on Windows phone. This interface lends itself to operations with a touchscreen.

Each app shows up as a tile on the 'Start Screen'. These app tiles are also capable of displaying dynamic updates. For instance, the News app will scroll through headlines while the People app will display latest updates from your social networks. Even Control Panel settings and Network Connections are handled through this new interface.

Desktop
There are two changes that Microsoft has made to the Desktop feature in Windows 8. First, it can now be accessed through a tile on the Modern UI. Second, the 'Start' button is no more! Instead, users have to move the cursor to the bottom-left corner of the screen, or press the Windows Key on the Keyboard to access the 'Start Screen'. In the Desktop mode, users will be able to run all the software they have always used in Windows. New programs will show up as a shortcut on the 'Start Screen'.

Gestures - Touchscreen
Since the Operating System is supposed to run on tablets, the Modern UI is designed to work with gestures such as pinching in and out for zooming in and out, scrolling through apps with a swipe of a finger
A few operations that can be done using Touchscreen
  • Pinch and Stretch to Zoom in and out. Get a global view of everything that's on your screen, and slide back and forth to find what you're looking for.
  • Swipe in from the left to switch between recently used apps.
  • Swipe in from the right to get back to Start and to other things you do often, like searching, sharing, changing your settings etc.
  • Swipe in from the bottom to see navigation controls for any app you're in.
You can easily do all these things with a mouse, too.

Apps
Windows 8 comes with its own app store, like iTunes store and the Google Play, where you can download and install apps. Of course, the store will be limited to Modern apps. Other apps and software will have to be procured and installed like how it's always been done.

Task Manager
Microsoft says that 85% of Windows users only bring up the 'applications' and 'processes' Task Manager to check which program is using up system resources and to close that are 'Not Responding'. So Microsoft decided to make this easier with a revamped Task Manager that displays a simple list of the programs that are running on your PC with a handy 'End Task' button. More details like Services, App History, Startup etc. are available, if needed.

Refresh and Restore
If a PC seemed sluggish, the old solution was to format the C Drive and re-install the OS, but Windows 8 gives users the option to go back to default settings by merely clicking the 'Refresh' option in the Settings menu. You don't loose any of your personal data in this. And in case this doesn't work, consider the restore option, which wipes the hard drive and re-installs Windows 8.

File Copy
File Copy now comes with buttons to pause, resume and stop the file transfer, and provides details on copy speed too.

Installing Windows 8?

Before that just read this. Right now, most users don't need to upgrade to Windows 8. But if you're buying a laptop or desktop, then sure, go for it. If you use a touchscreen PC running Windows 8, then definitely upgrade to Windows 8. Also, if you are currently considering a new notebook PC, it might make sense to wait a few months till new models with touchscreens enter the market.

Tools for USB Drives

That pen drive you carry along has become indispensable, letting you ferry documents, pics, music and movies to and fro. But it can do much more like protecting against viruses, automatically back-up data, launch you favorite programs off any PC without installing them, and even run a full operating system. Indeed, your USB drive can do much more than you know.

Pen Drive PC

Most Linux operating systems including Ubuntu and Fedora, can be run entirely off your Pen Drive. Ubuntu runs just like it would if you installed it on your hard drive. It's not as fast, but its good enough for browsing the web or working on office documents.

The advantage is that you get to carry you computer with you in your pocket. Any computer you come across can instantly become your own by just plugging in you pen drive. Currently, Windows and Maz OS don't have support for this but Microsoft will soon be launching a new version called Windows 8 On The Go.

Don't Just Delete - iBin
(Download Here)
In Windows, when you delete a file, it goes to Recycle Bin. In case, if you accidentally delete it, you can get it back. But in the case of pen drive, if you delete it, you better forget that file. Don't worry if that happens, cause iBin is here for rescue.

Well, iBin is a portable Recycle Bin for your pen drive. Download and extract the iBin folder to your USB drive and when you next plug it in, the program will start automatically. It continuously monitors your drive, if you try to delete any file, iBin will ask you if you want to erase it or 'Dump it to iBin'.  In this way, your files are safe. If you're running out short of memory, you can clean up your iBin with a click.

Password Protect

Your pen drive may contain some data that you don't want others to see but you still want others to be able to use the pen drive. Rohos Mini Drive Portable allows you to create a hidden partition within your pen drive itself, which is both encrypted and locked with a password.

Of course, if you want to password-protect the entire drive such that the whole drive is locked down. Then you gotta use Crptainer LE.

Download Rohos Mini Drive Portable
Download Cryptainer LE

Portable Programs
Just like portable operating systems, there is a host of apps that can run directly off your pen drive. For an instance, there are portable versions of Firefox and Chrome browsers, the dictionary software Wordweb and even the image editing tool Irfan View. Portable apps also offer the advantage of letting you run your favorite programs off your pen drive when you don't have administrator privileges on your office PC to install them.

For such softwares visit. www.portableapps.com, www.portablefreeware.com, www.pendriveapps.com

Stay Safe
(Download Here)
You plug your pen drive into a PC and a virus from that system infects your device without you knowing it. Then you come home, connect your USB to your PC and your hardware is infected. An antivirus can only help to a certain degree. The smarter option is to make your pen-drive read-only, so that when you plug it into a system, nothing can be written on it.

To do this, you can use USB Write Protector. Once it's on your drive, run the program and you'll get an option to switch USB Write Protection and you'll get on or off. If you want to write protect your pen drive, just switch it on. You'll have to eject your pen drive and reconnect for it to start.

Automatic Backups
(Download Here)
If you keep your documents open on a pen drive and work directly on them, then you know how much of pain it can be to back-up those files each-time you connect the drive to your PC. So here's Flash Copy to help. The app runs off the pen drive and lets you choose which folder on your hard drive it should automatically back-up files to. Additional options include settings for each file type, as well as whether to overwrite old files to keep copies of them. The cool part is that USB Flash Copy lets you create multiple profiles, so that if you use two PC's, you can have different settings for backing up to each of them, ensuring maximum data safety.

Disabling of sending of add-on information to Mozilla

Mozilla introduced the Get Add-ons dialog in the add-on manager of Firefox and Thunderbird in Firefox 4 and Thunderbird 5. It basically displays a list of featured and recommended add-ons for the user which they may or may not find useful.

The personalized recommendations are based on the add-ons that you have installed in the Firefox or Thuderbird if you have at least three add-ons installed. The program sends information about the installed add-ons to Mozilla once per day so that the recommended section on the Get add-ons screen can be updated.

Firefox and Thunderbird users may have two issues with the Get add-ons feature of the browser. First, it is sending add-on information to Mozilla once per day, which seems a bit excessive considering that most users probably do not make that many changes to their list of add-ons to justify that. The second one is the recommendations are not useful to justify keeping the feature enabled.
There's a way to disable the sending of add-on information to Mozilla.

Firefox
Press Shift-F2 to open the developer console. What you need to do here is set the preference firefox get add-ons extensions.getAddons, cache, enabled to false. You do that with the following command.

Thunderbird

You need to click on Tools>Options in Thunderbird and switch to Advanced>General Theme. Click on the config Editor screen here and enter the same preference name into the search box i.e., extensions.getAddons.cache.enabled

Double click the preference when it is displayed to change its value from true (enabled) to false (disabled). It is likely that other Mozilla-based programs have the same setting, provided that they also do display add-on recommendations in the application.

You gotta note that setting the preference to false blocks the updating of add-on metadata in the browser. Metadata includes screenshots, the description, ratings or downloads.

Samsung Galaxy Note II

Well, its been so long that I haven't posted anything, so here I'm, back with Samsung Galaxy Note II. Its Bigger, its better, its smarter (being a smart phone its gotta be). With the original Note. Samsung introduced a whole new category of devices called phablets which are , obviously, larger then phones and smaller than tablets. The Note II packs in better hardware, well we can say its top-notch, and a slightly bigger screen in a slimmer profile. It has, like the previous one, plastic and faux metal finish that has become Samsung's signature. Coming to its size, people with small hands might find the Note II slightly unwieldy to attend calls unless they pair it with  Bluetooth headset.
On the other hand, its large display allows for a better user experience. The Note II sports a bright touch screen with fantastic response and is capable of displaying vivid colors. Top-notch hardware handles FullHD movies, multitasking and anything else you want it to do. The speakers are loud, playback is clear and the call quality is not at its peak, there's a slight defect. But the real star in the Note II is its improved stylus - The S Pen - that feels responsive and its effortless to use.

Here comes the signature part of the Note series. With the bundled S Note apps, jotting down memos, annotating images with text, and even sketching seems more natural. And it converts hand-written notes into text.

The other highlight is the split-window mode. This allows users to work in two windows simultaneously - a real boon given the expansive screen. Still, split-windows is only supported by few apps such as Youtube, Gmail and the web browser. When it comes to the cameras, day-time pictures taken with the main shooter are sharp and detailed though in low light, some grain creeps in. FullHD 1080p videos, shot with the device. - though not as good as the still pictures - are bright and clear. The front camera works well during video chats.

GPS in this device locks within seconds and is accurate. The battery life is very good, lasting for 14 hours of heavy use (photography, gaming, Youtube, internet browsing on a 3G connection) and 22 hours of regular use. While there isn't anything wrong with the Note II, it's worth its price only if you need its stylus and big screen. Phones like the HTC One X or the Galazy S3 are cheaper and easy to handle. Similarly if you want a very big screen, the iPad or a 7 inch tablet Galaxy Tab 310 are arguably better deals.

Indeed, the appeal on the Note II lies in its integration of smartphone portability, stylus functionally and a larger-than-normal screen. It's the perfect device for people who find smartphones too limiting and tablets too big. If you fall in this category, you can't go wrong with Note II.

Secure Files : Encrypt on Click
(Download Here)
Want to keep a file or folder protected from snooping eyes? Well, there's a tool that can help. Its the 'Encrypt On Click'. Start the program, select the file or the folder that you want to protect, key in a password and then voila you're done. The file is now inaccessible to anyone without a password.

Encrypt on Click is tightly integrated with the Windows OS, so you don't need to run the program again to access the file. Double click a protected file and the software auto-starts, prompting for a password. Plus, you can right-click any file or folder and choose to 'Open With Encrypt On Click' to immediately lock it with a password.

Batch Rename : Metamorphose
(Download Here)
If you are constantly required to rename large groups of files on your computer, then you gotta need this. Here comes the Metamorphose. This tool is fairly simple to use : First, Select the files you want to rename by browsing to them in 'Picker' tab. Then, in the 'Main' tab, you can pick whether the operation acts on the name, the extension or both. You can add a prefix or a suffix to each file name, and even search for text in the name and replace it with something else. You can also modify the length of the file name, add date, time or numbers, and even insert characters in any place in it.

The best part about this tool is that every change you make is instantly previewed in a pane at the bottom along with the original file name next to it, so you know exactly what changes you've carried out. Metamorphose is a fantastic tool to have with you when you are organizing your music or media collections, or sorting your photos.

Undelete Data : Recuva
(Download Here)
Deleted a file by mistake? No worries, Recuva is here for you. Unless you used shredder tool (described in previous post), the file can be recovered with a nifty program called Recuva. When you run the program, you are prompted by a pop-up to choose the type of file you are looking to 'Undelete', whether pictures, music, documents, etc. Next, choose the driver where it was located or the whole PC itself. Before finishing, you will be asked whether you want to perform a 'deep scan' - check this option only if Recuva is unable to find your file in the first try.

Files found in the scan are marked either green (easy to recover), yellow (difficult to recover), or red (permanently deleted). Sometimes, the file's name might not be identifiable, but you can try the thumbnail preview or use your own judgement to figure out whether that's the file you were looking for. Once you locate file, click 'Recuva' and save it to your hard drive.

Smart Backup : Copy Changed Files
(Download Here)
If you routinely back-up your files to an external hard disk, then you might want to install this tool, Copy Changed Files. The tool always allows you to compare the contents of similar folders in two different locations - and then, only copies the files that have been modified. This tool is even simple to use. Free tools to manage files in Windows

The Search Tool : Everything
(Download Here)
With huge hard drives being the norm, searching for any document on your PC can be painstakingly slow exercise. This is because every time you search using the default tool in Windows, it has to scan each and every folder till it finds the file. Everything, on the other hand, helps you locate any document almost instantly. The first time you install the software, it indexes the contents on your hard drive. The program then sits unobtrusively in your system tray till you double click its icon. To search, simply type the name of the file you are looking for, and the software will serve it up to you, no wait whatsover.

You can also search by file extension and add strings for custom searches. For example, use 'office/invoice' to search the file names with the word 'invoice' in your 'office' folder, or 'Beatles !love' to exclude the term 'Love' from your search.

Better File Copy : TeraCopy
(Download Here)
The default copy tool in windows is bothersome if you deal with huge files. If there is an error while copying multiple files it'll abort the whole job. Plus, there is no way to pause and resume a transfer. And did you know that Windows doesn't actually copy files at the fastest possible rate. So Teracopy is here to rescue. The software features full shell integration, which means that it replaces the default Explorer copy tool so you don't have to start the program each time you are copying files.

While transferring, if there's an error, Teracopy will try multiple times to copy that file and if that doesn't happen, the file is skipped and the rest of the data is copied. At the end of the process, you can see which files posed a problem and try copying them again.

Plus, you can pause and resume the process if you need to run more resource-intensive program alongside. And, the software is optimized to get the fastest possible transfer speed on your computer.

Folder Lists : Filelist Creator
(Download Here)
When someone asks you to send them a list of pdf's or MP3s you have, it would be downright ridiculous to sit and search. If only there was a way to make a list of all the files in your folder. Well, Filelist Creator is there for that.

Point the program folder to start. You can choose to search all sub-folders if you want. Next, select the parameters of the files you want to be included : name, format, file size, path, date etc. all of which can be seen live in the preview window.

Filelist Creator lets you choose formatting options too, such as the header, spacing, grouping and order of the columns as well. Once you've had a pick, choose whether you want a text file, CSV, HTML or image and save it.

Delete Forever : File Shredder
(Download Here)
When you 'delete' a file in windows, its not entirely erased from your hard drive. The delete function simply hides the file till the space it occupies is overwritten with new data. Still, specialized file recovery software can retrieve these files easily. Don't worry, File Shredder is here for rescue.

File Shredder is a simple tool that gets the job done by 'writing' over the files multiple times with random binary data. Start the program, select the files and shred them with a button. Simple.

In the settings tab, you can choose the type of encryption you want to use to shred a file. There's also an option to shred free disk space. As said, a file is not completely gone when you delete it, which means it's still occupying some space. File shredder purges this data by rewriting over it as well.

Discover Duplicates : Anti-Twin
(Download Here)
Sometimes, you have the same file stored in different folder or hard drives. If you wanna find those files and delete them, then you gotta call Anti-Twin.
It's a damn simple interface. First, select a folder as the basic comparison point, you can either search within the folder for duplicate files, or compare the folder with another. For the comparison criteria, you can go by the filename, minimum and maximum file size, extensions, and even the content.

Once Anti-Twin finds multiple copies, you can choose to let the duplicate remain where it is, move it or delete it and, in that folder leave a link to the original.

Remove deactivated or deleted profiles in Facebook

FB might be the largest social networking site today, but it has got a few flaws. A lot of changes made by FB seem to cause problems for the users. First the ticker and then the ability of friends to add you to groups with friends to add you to groups without your permission. Then there's a problem regarding deactivated and deleted profiles in your friend list. Since the changes made, people started to notice old profiles, along with the new ones, that had been deactivated in their friend list. Now this is not a problem, but it clutters up your list and inflates your number of friends. Now, you cna easily find and delete these profiles from your list and clear up the mess.

Detecting Deactivated Profiles

First thing to remove useless profiles is to detect if you have any of them in your friend list. So how do you know you have these deactivated profiles in your account? Well, the process is pretty simple. Go to your profile, and note down the total number of friends you have. This will show you the total number of people in your friends list, including those who have deleted or deactivated their profiles. This is where the problem is, because it should only display the number of active profile. Hence, FB's metrics are flawed.

Now, go to https://www.facebook.com/me/friends, and count the total number of profiles displayed there. This number will most likely be lesser than the previos one.

The reason for this : Suppose you have 100 friends, and someone added you on FB. So your total count becomes 101. sometime later, he decides to deactivate his FB profile. Now your couunt should get back to 100, but it doesn't. It'll be 101, with a deactivated profile.

Removing Deactivated Profiles

You can easily remove the ghost profiles from your list manually. If you start searching on FB with a letter, FB will show you your friends that have that letter in their names. For example, type in a letter 's' and you will see yours friends who has 's' in their name.

Now, you can easily recognize the de-activated profile from the default silhouettes instead of profile pictures. You might also see silhouettes in your friend list. If those silhouettes are active profiles, then you will see a pop-up when hovering over them. Otherwise, they're just deactivated profiles that you choose to delete. Click on them, and you'll get a message saying that the profile has been deleted or deactivated. There's an option to un-friend that profile. Now, you're done. Click on unfriend.

Have fun....:D

Micromax A100 Specs, Pros and Cons

Here's another smart-phone or a phablet on a budget. Its Micromax A100.....So, why to delay? Here I go
Pros
  • Good Design : The first thing one notices, at first look, is its premium look. Its awesome with its rounded edges, rubberized back covers, on-screen buttons and attention to detail. These features make it one of the best-looking smart phone on budget.
  • Touchscreen : A100 has one of the best touchscreens. I assure you. Colors are rendered vividly and brightly. Besides, the handset responds promptly to touches and swipes.
  • Battery Life : The Micromax A100 has fantastic battery, in other words, a monstrous 2000mAh battery. On average use, it lasts for over 18 hours.
Cons
  • UI lags : A100 suffers from chronic lags. If you switch between apps too fast or open more than two windows in the browser, the phone seems sluggish. Try running more than a couple of apps at once and it starts to choke.
  • Media Playback : You must be kidding me. If you love watching movies in HD, you better choose another handset. This is not one of those devices where you can just copy any media file and play it. In most cases, the phone can't even handle 720p HD videos.
  • Camera : The camera in this handset is disappointing. The images it shoots lack details and in case of low light, the pictures suffer from too much grain.

Specs
  • 5" multi-touchscreen, 16.8 million color vivid display
  • Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
  • 4GB internal memory, expandable up to 32 Gb microSD
  • 5Mp Camera with flash, 4X zoom, 0.3 front cam
  • 1GHz processor
  • 3G, USB 2.0, Bluetooth, WiFi
  • Dual Sim (GSM+GSM)
  • 142.2mx72.6mmx11.9mm (dimensions)
  • 2000mAh Battery

Steps
If the embed code is like this
<iframe allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/rxwMEv7P7Mw" width="420"></iframe>

The change that should be done

At the end of the Youtube URL add "?modestbranding=1"

i.e., in the above example, the change is
"http://www.youtube.com/embed/rxwMEv7P7Mw?modestbranding"

Click on any part of the player, anywhere you wish to, you will never get redirected to Youtube. But however, at the end of the video, Youtube video suggestions will appear.
